Military Technology to Modern Times

The pre-modern era of military technology is the period preceding the US Civil war because the US Civil War is known as the first modern war.

During much of this period it is difficult to separate civilian from military technology in many instances because many societies were more-or-less in perpetual states of conflict. Most significant technical innovations were military or defensive in nature.
